Summary:

Monthly Report on China Construction Steel Market for January, 2010

China construction steel market fell in January, which resulted from government¡¯s liquidity curbs, rising inventory and low off consumption season.

Supply pressure will mount further in February which Spring Festival falls on. Marketplace inventory will be piling up further since steel mills maintain production uninterrupted during Spring Festival while trading day decrease in February. On the other hand, iron ore, coke price rise and supply shortage restrict the downward room. Credit loans will remain loose as traditionally banks would not put curbs in loans in every first quarter of new year. China construction steel market would rally and slightly pick up in February, 2010.

Monthly Report on China Medium Plate Market for January, 2010

Chinese medium plate price fluctuated in Jan. The output growth stayed at high level, and exports decreased again, however, rising plate bookings in large and medium enterprises eased oversupply. Slab price stayed firm consecutively, and available resources were limited, which affected the profit of re-rollers seriously. The average capacity utilization rate of medium plate re-rollers in East China decreased to 40 percent; and the range of production cutbacks would increase. Medium plate price performed weak in the international market. New-added capacity of medium plate in S Korea would be released gradually. It is expected that Chinese medium plate price would fluctuate before Spring Festival, Chinese traditional holiday, and is expected to escalate moderately thereafter.

Monthly Report on China Iron Ore Market for January 2010

China iron ore price picked up continuously in January 2010, however, that in northern China went down slightly from late January. In a wake of rapid jump, price of imported ore moved down to some degree, as of ending January, the latest quotation of Indian fines (Fe content of 63.5 percent) stood at USD$ 124-126 per tonne (CIF), up USD$ 3-5 per tonne over last month. With the forthcoming of Spring Festival, domestic small-and-medium mines cut down iron ore production and the entire transaction appeared bleak. After about two-months purchase, iron ore inventory of steel mills climbed up to some extent. Due to steel price drop, steel mills appeared hesitated in purchasing temporarily, it is predicted that iron ore price in the future is likely to be stable as a whole.

China¡¯s scrap price trended up in January, while the growth slowed down in the second half of month. Although steel price was corrected recently, scrap market kept robust on the back of low social inventory and falling imports.

In February, scrap supply will shrink further and large-and-medium-scaled steelmakers will keep high operating rate, thus scrap supply conflict will deteriorate. SteelHome predicts that China's scrap price will welcome slight upside in February.
